Students come to the community school via referrals from the Department of Probation, School Attendance Review Boards, and school districts. Homeless students may also be served. Students in community schools are temporarily in need of a supportive, alternative educational program in order to progress academically and socially.

Thomas E. Mathews (TEM) is a County Community School serving students in grades 7-12 in Yuba County who have been expelled, referred by probation or SARB (State Attendance Review Board) for truancy. We work with students to successfully reinstate back to their district of residence by the end of their term. We strive to build not only their academic capacity but improve pro-social behaviors and self-image using Panther PRIDE: teaching students to be Positive, Respectful, have Integrity, be Dependable and Empowered.

We received the California Community School Partnership (CCSP) grant, which connects our schools with community resources to serve the needs of the students, their families and the community at large.

In addition to academic curriculum, we offer art, welding, career explorations, anger management, mindfulness, marijuana education, TUPE (tobacco use prevention education), boys' and girls' groups and a Wellness Center open to students and their families. Other supports being developed through CCSP include community outreach events, after school and summer programing.
